A small town two hours from Bogota, Colombia that everyone needs to visit if you come to Colombia.

Most people think of beaches when visiting Colombia in Santa Marta and Cartagena; unfortunately, small towns are overlooked to foreign visitors. Colombia has hundreds of small towns that are gorgeous and rich of Colombian culture and one of those towns is Villa de Leyva.

This place is historically significant, quaint, teaming with local flavor and great shops eateries. What more could you want? From here you can walk to the Chocolate Museum, hear the bells toll in the centuries old Cathedral, see people walking around and pick up local gossip or shop for the perfect ruana after a good cup of coffee. (Angela, Trip Advisor)

Apart from being a great escape from the city of Bogota, it has plenty of activities to do for a family, a romantic getaway, or a group friends. .

Visit Pozo Azules

Just five minutes from Villa de Leyva are the Pozos Azules which are artificial pools because of the effects of natural salts and minerals in the soil around them. It gives them a remarkable blue color, such that they almost seem like fluorescent pools in certain light. Make sure you take a hat and sunscreen.

Rent an ATV or Buggy

Renting an ATV or a buggy is definitely something people should do when they visit. There are several of companies that will rent them to you for an hour (Recommend Villa de Leyva Extrema). There is also horseback riding but I prefer the ATV or buggy.

Visiting the Plaza Mayor

The Plaza Mayor is where mainly everyone hangs out during the day and night. There are several bars around the corners so after a long day or somewhere to relax, it good have a few good beers there and listen to musicians play on the street with your friends or family.

Terracotta House

This 500 m² house is made entirely of clay. It has been called the largest piece of pottery in the world. It’s an entirely liveable house, complete with working kitchen, bathrooms and several bedrooms.

Rappelling

This was by far one of the funnest activities. As mentioned above, Villa de Leyva Extrema can help you out with this. Make sure you take clothes to change into afterward.

Dining Out

There a variety of restuarants around the town so you will not be limited with your options. . They have Italian, Peruvian, Arabic, Greek, Carribean and many more; therefore, if you are picky or craving something in particular, you will not be disappointed. Also, many restuarants have live music so you will get dinner and a show.

Chocolate Museum

If you love chocolate, then you have to visit the Chocolate Museum. It was the first time I tried chocolate beer and it was delicuous. They have light, milk and dark chocolate so there is a flavor for everyone.

Overrall, this small town is loved many Colombian citizens and is a destination that everyone that needs to visit when they come to Colombia. Of course, there are more things to do and see, along with great AirBnBs and hotels
